When pumping stops being optional
When the truck cannot get close to the front, when material has to go up a level, when the surface is large and must come out with no cold joint, and when temperature forces fast placement. In those four cases, barrowing is not a cheaper alternative: it is a way of losing strength.
What it actually solves
It keeps a continuous flow between trucks, respects the design slump because the mix does not need watering down to move, and allows several trucks to discharge back to back onto the same front. That continuity is the condition for the element to cure as one piece.
What must be ready beforehand
Formwork checked and shored, rebar placed and verified, clear access for the equipment and enough crew to vibrate and finish. The pump places at a rate the crew must be able to follow; otherwise unvibrated concrete piles up.
Pumping and extreme heat in Mexicali
Above 40 °C the time between discharge and placement is the critical variable. Pumping shortens it, but it does not replace the rest: pours scheduled early in the morning or in the afternoon, shaded materials, wind protection and immediate curing after finishing.
