Questions about deformed rebar

The structural design defines it based on the element and the load. In housing, columns and tie beams are usually resolved with small diameters and beams with larger ones, but the figure must come from the project, not from habit.

The project specifies that too. The lap is what guarantees continuity of reinforcement; trimming it to save steel is where the most capacity is lost per kilo saved.

Light, dry surface rust does not prevent the work and can even improve bond. What is not usable is bar with flaking rust that detaches or with obvious loss of section.

Whatever the project specifies for the exposure. That cover is what protects the steel from corrosion: if the cage sits against the formwork, the bar corrodes even in good concrete.
