Lime is the oldest additive in masonry and it is still the most effective at what it does: making mortar manageable. A mortar of cement and sand alone is harsh, it cuts under the trowel and loses water too quickly against a dry block. Adding lime turns it into a plastic mix the mason can spread, adjust and finish without fighting it.
